October 13-20 declared as ‘Cooperative Week’
LANSING, Mich.—The state Senate declared October 13-20, 2012, as “Cooperative Week” in Michigan, after adopting an official resolution introduced by state Sen. Mike Green.
“Today, we recognize cooperatives around the state and the nation,” said Green, R-Mayville. “Cooperatives are member-owned businesses that are critical to the agriculture industry and to our economy, having created millions of jobs for folks throughout the country and strengthening their local communities.”
According to the resolution, there are more than 29,000 cooperatives in the United States that generate more than 2 million jobs and annual sales of $652 billion. In addition to their commercial function, a core component of cooperatives’ mission is to play a key role in the areas they are located.
“It is fitting as harvest season winds down that we recognize cooperatives and their members. I’m pleased that the Michigan Senate has declared this coming week in their honor,” Green said.
