Monday town hall meeting to focus on water levels

LANSING, Mich.— The low water levels of the Great Lakes and the Saginaw Bay and their impact on the region will be the focus of a March 18 town hall meeting hosted by state Sen. Mike Green. The town hall is open to the public and will take place this Monday at 6 p.m. in the Davidson Room of the Bay City DoubleTree Hotel, 1 Wenonah Park Place, Bay City.

“Low water levels affect all of us, our natural resources, the economy and our way of life,” said Green, R-Mayville. “The causes and effects of these low water levels and ways to responsibly deal with them are the focus of the town hall with Jon W. Allan, one of the strongest advocates for the Great Lakes in the country.”

Jon W. Allan was recently appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder to head the Michigan office of the Great Lakes as its director. Allan is a well-known leader on environmental and natural resources policy. He currently also serves as head of the Michigan delegation for the Great Lakes Commission and as a member of the Great Lakes Executive Committee for the Water Quality Agreement.

“The state recognizes that low Great Lakes levels could critically impact the health, safety and well-being of Michigan residents and visitors. I look forward to sharing information about what has contributed to the problem, discussing the state’s plans to address the issue and answering questions,” said Allan.

Green said that while debates over Great Lakes policy are not without controversy, he believes that the discussion will help lead to bipartisan consensus.

“The Great Lakes and all of Michigan’s plentiful water resources are environmental and economic treasures that should be preserved for generations to come. We’ve already made some legislative progress and I’m confident there are more solutions we can take a look at,” Green said.
